Lazy Person vs. Lazy Money
I’m sure you’re familiar with the saying, ‘Early bird catches the worm.’ Well I’ve also heard this one from a very successful investor, ‘Forget getting up at the crack of dawn to get the worm, I’ll just wait and eat the bird that catches the worm, then I’ll get both with the same effort.’ His point was you’ve got to learn to work smarter not harder. The same thing goes for your money.
This brings up another good question. What’s worse being a lazy person or having lazy money? I’d actually argue that lazy money is worse. You can be a hard worker and never get ahead. After all, you can only work so many hours a day and so many days a week. I know many, many people who work their *&$% off and never seem to get anywhere. On the other hand, if you can teach your money to work hard for you, then you can afford to be a little lazy. Now don’t get me wrong, you certainly can’t start out being lazy. And you’ll really be in trouble if both you and your money are lazy (not a good combination). You’re going to have to build up to it and gradually as your money gets smarter and works harder then you can work less and less if you choose. It’s a process and it takes time but you can get there.
The great thing about money working hard is its a 24 hr a day 365 day a year employee. You do have to manage it and make sure it knows what its doing but it sure is a good partner to have.
One of the best ways that money works for me is through Stock Option selling. I’ve been able to teach my money how to make consistent returns month after month no matter what the direction of the market is. While I’m sleeping at night or enjoying the weekend my money is hard at work. You see, options that are sold become more and more valuable with each passing day.
In many ways I feel like I’m retired. My main ‘job’ now is managing my family’s money. It took a while to become good at it and feel comfortable enough to leave the working world behind but I’m at that place now. It sure is a good feeling to know that I don’t have to be somewhere at a certain time. To know, I don’t have to work hard for someone else so they can reap the rewards. I’ve gained control over the most valuable asset of all, time. I have taught my money to work hard for me and it’s doing a great job.
